In becoming The "Wicked" Witch, Elphaba had to lose her best friend G'linda. She gave G'linda the choice of coming with her to runaway together, but G'linda refused. She couldn't leave her popularity. I was surprised that Elphaba actually acepted that, and left her behind, but Elphaba knew that it wouldn't be the end of their friendship. They were now enemies, without actually disliking each other.
